So called because of the ‘gunbarrel straight’ road which was the main route between Boulder and Longmont, Gunbarrel was developed in the early ’60’s as a community built around a golf course. When IBM announced their intention to build on a huge 640 acre property, Gunbarrel’s proximity meant it became the neighborhood of choice for the company’s executives. More recently, avant-garde ad agency Crispin Porter made Gunbarrel their Rocky Mountain home.
Its residents prize Gunbarrel for its almost semi-rural feel – Boulder Reservoir, just across the Diagonal Highway,
is a great location for all things aquatic and for leisurely picnics by the lake. Great trails surround the area, including bike paths leading both to Boulder and Longmont. And of course the Golf Course is a treasured local hangout.
The advent of Crispin has accelerated the development of good eateries and coffee shops around the area. Blue gets good . Another hidden gem is the Café attached to legendary the Celestial Seasonings tea company,
which is headquartered in Gunbarrel. Celestial has been in business almost 50 years. According to the company, the brand currently offers more than 70 unique varieties of herbal, green, black, wellness, rooibos and chai teas, as well as ready-to-drink tea lattes. Each blend is expertly crafted from the finest herbs, teas, spices and botanicals, and is presented in our iconic packaging that is adorned with beautiful imagery and inspiring words that are part of the brand’s heritage.
Home prices in Gunbarrel are midway between Boulder’s and Longmont’s. Most homes were built in the 70’s, many have been extensively remodeled. Area schools are in the highly regarded Boulder Valley School district – Heatherwood Elementary, Platt Junior High, and Boulder High.
